On 6th August 2026 an updated service specification was published. The changes will come into effect on 3rd September 2026.
This is the first vaccine programme to be offered by only community pharmacies. The service will start on 20th July 2026 and end on 31st March 2027.
From 29th October 2025 the service has been expanded to include provision of emergency contraception, allow pharmacy technicians to provide the service and to add drospirenone to the list of contraceptives that can be supplied.
From 1st October 2025 the PGDs and Clinical Pathways for Pharmacy First have been updated. Visit our Pharmacy First page for a link to the updated documents and a side by side comparison showing the changes to the clinical pathways. SystmOne, used by most of the GP practices in our area, can now send referrals directly in to the pharmacy clinical IT platform in the same way as NHS111. You might like to highlight this new functionality to your local practices.
From 29th October 2025 depression has been included as an eligible therapeutic area. Wording in the service specification relating to timings of the intervention and follow up consultations has been amended and subcontracting of the service to another provider is no longer allowed.
