Switching Fostair MDI to Bibecfo MDI for Adult Asthmatic Patients – September 2024
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough system-wide Formulary has recently been updated with the following recommendations:
- Bibecfo® pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI) is recommended as first line choice for asthma in adults, where a patient is unable to be switched to a dry powder inhaler (DPI)
- Fostair NEXThaler® DPI (dry powder inhaler) remains the first line choice dry powder inhaler for asthma in adults.
- Fostair® pMDI has been reclassified to black switch (non-formulary) i.e., not recommended for prescribing in primary or secondary care.
The Asthma Management in adults flowchart has been updated to include these new recommendations. Please refer to NetFormulary for more information.
Practices will be reviewing their prescribing of Fostair MDI, and the switch process will be facilitated directly by Eclipse Live via their Boomerang system software tool. Boomerang is an interface within the Eclipse platform (that facilitates medication optimisation switches. The Eclipse Team will contact patients and provide all the necessary information for the new inhaler via text message. The switch is an opt out switch therefore if patients do not respond within 7 days they may be switched automatically. Patients will have access to a helpline telephone number if they wish to discuss further with the Eclipse Team.
