Generic dapagliflozin Switch (starting October 2026)
In line with national and local guidance on best-value medicines, the ICB is starting a gradual shift away from SGLT2 inhibitors other than generic dapa (and branded Forxiga) to generic dapagliflozin. This will largely be managed by Spirit Healthcare on behalf of our local practices. The programme team has been asked to contact community pharmacies when their local practice is ready to start switching patients so you can manage your stock appropriately. Levemir Discontinuation (2026)
Levemir® (insulin detemir) is being discontinued, and NHS England has advised that the majority of patients should be switched to an appropriate alternative insulin by the end of September 2026 to ensure continuity of supply. As supplies reduce, it is important that patients are reviewed and switched as soon as possible to minimise the risk of treatment disruption.
Pharmacy teams are asked to proactively remind any patients collecting Levemir prescriptions that the product is being discontinued and advise them to contact their diabetes specialist team, or their GP practice where appropriate, as soon as possible to arrange a review and switch if this has not already taken place.
Thank you for your continued support in helping to ensure patients are safely transitioned to alternative insulin therapies ahead of the withdrawal of Levemir.
